James Cameron's Avatar may well be the most anticipated motion picture event of all time, but the Titanic follow up seems more like an exorbitant, extravagant outing rather than a stunning experience.
It was reported today that the total budget of Avatar is a massive $500 million! Of course that's including marketing costs with the production costs. That would make it the most expensive movie of all time! Two years ago Pirates of the Caribbean opened in theatres which had a budget of excess of $300 million, and Transformers: Revenge of the fallen reportedly had a budget of $400 million including marketing costs.
But then how does Avatar make a profit? The film would have to make ONE BILLION DOLLARS to make a decent profit. But is that to much of a risk? The movie would in all probability generate $250 million at least in the domestic market, and would pwn internationally as well. Transformers 2 grossed in excess of $800 million in spite of beging so craptastic.
Whichever the case, we're heading to the IMAX screen first day first show. Half a billion dollar movies can't possibly be bad.
